There is no access in Atglen, and no apparent trail. We drove further west to Bart Township along Route 896 parking at the Evergreen Hardware Store. There is a switchback down to the trail. For about two miles in each direction the trail is nice stone dust, but after that, at mile 23.5 turns into the transmission right of way with just a lane, which is okay to ride towards Quarryville. Going east, you can go to about mile marker 26.5 again with a mile or so in stone dust, but getting to Scarborough Twp it is the transmission right of way - just two single lanes, rideable until you get to yellow gates, unpassable unless you walk your bike down and up inclines. Can't say what's from there to AtGlen - it is high grass and TX right of way at best. If you can, drive down to Quarryville - a very nice trail from there west to Turkey Hill.
Nice , pleasant ride though suburban areas, places to stop if one wishes, level with interesting things to see and experience. Side trip into preserves and beautiful Swedenborg church. Missed the connector to the lower part ( thought trail short no wonder) I shell return!
Aesthetic wise a very pleasing experience, everything a trail could have, parks, picnic areas, woods, rural roads, bridges, town, connector trails. Mostly flat with one incline for good measure. Long or short rides . A true delight, a fave!
If I could give it zero stars I would, such a waste. Ruined the only wooded part of the neighborhood we had left where the kids used to play all day. Tore down dozens of trees for a trail no one uses.
Bartley road end a bit noisy with the 3:4 crush stone but not a bad ride , once you hit dirt and the “ Whitestone “ it gets much better of a ride . Not much in the way of stops for food , 1 small deli off the trail in Califon and several eateries 6 miles down at the end in High Bridge. Not much to see along the way but old towns & occasional old houses , however you do see some nice views of the river.
The trail is incredibly straight, so it can seem boring at times, but that also makes long rides easy since you can just go without having to slow down for roads or anything. Eden and Bart townships have done work on improving their segments, and the whole trail, even where it says “unimproved,” is perfectly rideable until Atglen, where it does deteriorate a bit. Overall great trail.
The Brandywine is the perfect city park. It connects most every neighborhood along the Brandywine river. Plenty of space for joggers, kids, dogs and folks who use walking aids. Scenic, clean and minimal noise pollution.
We rode from the Cementon trailhead out 10 miles to Slatington and back on March 19, 2025 and were disappointed in the conditions of the trail. Encountered large stones throughout the ride unlike the crushed stone base we experienced in previous rides in the spring of 24 and fall of 22. It was if someone maintaining the trail deposited large ballast rocks all along the trail surface really impacting the surface normally smooth ride. Also had to navigate many miles of bumpy tire tracks.
Great trail. Hoping for northward extension soon. Lunch at The Steam Pub in Southampton right next to the trail is a must for me. Don’t forget to head south, too, onto the contiguous Pennypack Rail Trail. It was extended last year (2024) into Philadelphia to SEPTA’s Fox Chase Regional Rail station. If you start there, you must pay to park at all times. The lot is managed by the city, not SEPTA. Continue even farther into center city Philadelphia with your bike on the train. See SEPTA’s website for rules regarding bicycles.
I walk here often with my dog. If you’re on a bike coming up behind me, or if you are running and approaching from behind me, I can’t hear you!! Naturally my dog will shy or jump up due to a startle. Please use a bell or call out. Thanks!
Such a nice walk with great views and walked 7.5 miles !! Great place, with great scenery!
